RAIL workers from three operators have begun a 24-hour strike on the day of the Grand National at Aintree in Merseyside.
The walkout is the latest action involving Southern, Merseyrail and Arriva Rail North in a dispute over the role of conductors.
Merseyrail said a decision from its workers to strike on the day of the Grand National would damage Liverpool's reputation.
The Rail, Maritime and Transport union, who represents the workers, has said it will unveil a billboard to explain the reasons for the strike to people enjoying the event.
The union claim plans for driver-only trains, with conductors removed, will make the services unsafe and cause job losses.

The latest walkout will affect people planning to arrive in Aintree by train.
Merseyrail said services will operate every seven-and-a-half minutes at "key times".
It has prioritised routes between Aintree and Liverpool city centre, with the replacement timetable in place between 11.15am and 1.30pm and then between 5.30pm and 7.15pm.
Merseyrail managing director Jan Chaudhry-van der Velde said: "Despite the RMT's best efforts to scupper this iconic event and create misery for the tens of thousands of people who look forward to it all year, we've developed a timetable aimed at getting as many people between central Liverpool and Aintree as we normally do on Grand National day."
John Tilley, regional organiser for the RMT in the North West, said: ""We don't want to be out on strike. We want to be able to settle these issues.
"The bottom line is, on Northern, the proposal is to take guards off 50% of their services, on Merseyrail it's 100%.
"That's the point of the dispute and people need to be talking to us about that."
In January a young woman was stopped from getting a train despite having a ticket in a "disgusting" confrontation with staff.
